Laser Hair Removal in the Bay Area — Santa Rosa

The typical remedies of the past for removing unwanted hair have been shaving, waxing, plucking, and the use of chemical depilatories. In addition to being painful and inconvenient, these methods are only temporary. Long-term hair removal can be achieved through electrolysis, but this procedure can be uncomfortable and slow, and it can lead to scarring if performed incorrectly. Our Dermatologists offer an alternative to inconvenient, painful, and/or temporary hair removal methods with laser hair removal. At our centers, serving Santa Rosa and other Bay Area communities, we use the Lumenis LightSheer® diode laser as a convenient and easy method for permanent hair removal.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is an effective and convenient method for permanently eliminating unwanted hair. Compared to other permanent hair removal methods, such as electrolysis, which can take numerous visits over many months, laser hair removal is quick. It can also be used to treat large areas of the body relatively quickly, although you may need multiple treatments to achieve optimal results. Our laser is designed to remove hair from large areas of the body faster and more comfortably than other hair removal methods.

Lumenis LightSheer® — Advanced Technology for Laser Hair Removal

The special contact-cooling handpiece of the Lumenis LightSheer® laser allows us to treat even the most sensitive skin. This cooling handpiece protects the upper layer of skin during laser hair removal. The laser emits a beam of highly concentrated light that is directed to the hair root and absorbed by the melanin pigment in the hair follicles. This laser light heats up the hair follicles, destroying their ability to grow hair.

The hairs that are most affected by laser hair removal are in an active growth phase, called anagen. Because all hairs may not be in the growth phase at the time of the initial treatment, more than one laser hair removal treatment at our Bay Area practice is typically necessary to achieve optimal results.

Laser Hair Removal Procedure

Prior to laser hair removal at Dermatology Associates of the Bay Area, the treatment area is shaved. The procedure lasts from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the area to be treated. The laser may cause slight discomfort; however, most patients find treatment very tolerable. To make laser hair removal more comfortable, a topical anesthetic may be applied to highly sensitive areas of the body before treatment with the laser.

Side effects of laser hair removal are typically minor, and may include swelling and redness around the hair follicles. Most people are able to return to their normal routine immediately after a laser hair removal treatment.
