Laser aesthetic technology has advanced tremendously in recent years. With shorter pulse durations, cooled handpieces, and variable wavelengths, we can now treat a variety of skin conditions better and more safely. Our dermatologists have many state-of-the-art lasers at their disposal which enable them to carefully select the right laser for the right indication. We offer facial rejuvenation including IPL® FotoFacial™, laser treatment of broken blood vessels (telangiectasias) and pigmented lesions (sun spots).
The IPL® (intense pulsed light) FotoFacial™ (sometimes written as "photofacial") is an advanced technology that we use to treat sun damaged skin. The procedure uses intense broad spectrum light in the visible and near infrared range from the Lumenis Quantum SR™. It is a highly effective laser light treatment for reducing the appearance of redness, rosacea, brown spots, and sun spots.
During the FotoFacial™ procedure, a cold gel is applied to the treatment area and the IPL® handpiece is gently placed on the skin to apply pulses of laser light. Your eye are protected with special shields. After the session, your skin may look a little pink like it is mildly sunburned. In the subsequent days, your brown spots may temporarily darken and then will peel off.
In addition to treating skin imperfections related to blood vessels and abnormal pigmentation, the IPL® FotoFacial™ procedure also improves skin texture and promotes a brighter complexion and overall facial rejuvenation. Contact our dermatology centers serving communities around Oakland and Santa Rosa to learn how FotoFacial™ treatment can help you.

Using our state-of-the-art lasers, we can treat common skin conditions, such as broken blood vessels, rosacea, and pigmented lesions. We also use our lasers for laser hair removal and laser tattoo removal.
Facial broken blood vessels or Telangiectasia commonly develop on the face from sun damage or rosacea. With the Iridex Diolte 532 diode laser, these unsightly red blemishes are easily treated at our practice. The laser emits a monochromatic light that is specifically designed to target blood vessels in the skin. The laser light is attracted to and absorbed by the oxyhemoglobin in the blood vessels. The heat of this light causes the unwanted cells to decompose, while leaving the surrounding cells unharmed.

We also use the MedLite® C6 laser and the DioLite™ laser to reduce the appearance of pigmented lesions, such as brown spots, freckles, and other abnormally pigmented areas. The laser light is attracted to and absorbed by the black or brown pigment in these areas. The heat causes the unwanted pigmentation to fade while leaving the surrounding cells unaffected.
If you have areas of unwanted pigmentation, brown spots or pigmented lesions, our dermatologists can examine your skin to determine which laser will best treat your specific condition.

Because there is some discomfort associated with laser treatments, we often apply a topical anesthetic cream on the treatment area 15 to 30 minutes before your session. An ice pack will be applied to the area immediately following laser surgery to help reduce any swelling that may occur. The area should be kept clean during recovery, and should be kept well moisturized using an antibiotic ointment, Vaseline®, or Aquaphor® several times a day.
Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun following laser surgery, so it is important to wear sunscreen or other sun protection, such as broad rimmed hats, until your skin has returned to normal. Sun exposure during recovery can cause permanent or very long-lasting hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) or hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin).
